The Nikon D40 Digital SLR camera sounds like a good deal. Nikon or Canon will be good, whatever it is so just buy whatever your max budget is. When I purchased my Nikon D300 I spent 2 weeks reading online reviews, magazines etc. Looking at the photos in the mags and seeing what camera people were using helped to. I think you could pick up a D200 second hand within your price range too. The important thing to consider is what brand would you see yourself using in 2 + years? because once you go down the Nikon, Canon, Olympus or whatever road then that is what you will probably still be using in a few years. With each brand then you can change lenses with other models made by the same company.
